For the lathe tool, Ellyn, Mike, and I worked to make works of art on the lathe. First we just learned how to setup the lathe tool and how to use all of the tools. We first just learned how to make dowels. Then we made simple curves and designs. This was great practice to learn how to get control of the machine.

Then we started to make the pens.

First you have to glue up the pen blank. You do this by roughing up the tube and then mixing up fast curing epoxy. Now just put on epoxy onto the tube and slide it into the pre-cut pen blank. Repeat and let it set for 30 minutes or until it is dry.

Now just scrape out all the excess glue that dripped into the tube. Now put it on the rod that holds the blanks on the rod. First put on a metal bushing, then put on a blank, then another bushing, then the second blank, then two more bushings. Now screw on the top and set it up on the lathe. Set up the tool rest and you are good to go.

Now start turning the pen blank. Get the pen so it is a perfect cylinder. NOw add any contours you want and get the ends thin enough so they are about the same diameter as the bushing.

Now sand. Start with 60 or 80 grit. Once this is done swith to 120 and finish it with 220.

Now apply the lacker. Use a cheese cloth and apply thin coats. It sets with friction so use plenty of pressure when drying and wait until your hand is hot. You can also apply EEE cream but I found it didn't really affect the pen.

Now assemble your pen with all the parts on the pen press.

Now you are set to write.
